Wrestlers have productive season

Another productive season was experienced in 2021-2022 by the Ponca City Wildcat wrestling team.

The season got underway for Coach Justin Roland's squad with a victory over Class 3A powerhouse and eventual state runner-up Blackwell. It went on to include qualifying for Dual State for the second consecutive year and then to have three wrestlers earn medals at the Class 6A State Tournament.

Sophomore Chris Kiser, at 106 pounds, won the individual championship at the State, while Cameron Kiser was third at 120 and Gabe Roland was fourth at 182.

In the prestigious Perry Tournament of Champions, Ponca City placed third out of 19 teams. In that event Chris Kiser was first at 106; Ryker Agee was first at 138; Preston Lee was second at 126, Gabe Roland was second at 182; Cameron Kiser was third at 120; andd Landon Newlin was fifth at 195 and Joe Leavitt was fifth at 220.

One of the season highlights was Ponca City defeating Perry by the stunning score of 70-6 in dual action at Robson Field House. Perry, which has won many, many state championships, obviously experienced an off-year.

In the Kansas City Stampede wrestling tournament, the Wildcats placed ninth out of 54 teams. In this event, Chris Kiser and Landon Newlin each won their weight divisions. Other Wildcats finishing in the Top 10 were Jimmy Swenson at 113, sixth; and Cameron Kiser and Gabe Roland, each coming in at 10th place.

Wrestling in the Jenks Tournament, the Wildcats finished second as a team, with 20 other teams competing. Tournament individual champions were Christopher Kiser at 106; Gabe Roland at 182, Landon Newlin at 195 and Joe Leavitt at 220. Runners up included Cameron Kiser and Preston Lee. Others earning a place were Jack Swenson at 132 third; Rayden Agee 4th at 170 and Cayson Badley, 6th at heavyweight.

In the District Duals at Tulsa Union, Ponca City topped Union 56-21; Deer Creek of Edmond 64-17 and then Sand Springs 50-30 to earn a spot in the Dual State Tournament in Enid. In the Dual State, Ponca City wrestled against Stillwater in the first round, but lost. It was the second time the No. 1 ranked Stillwater team had beaten the Wildcats.

In the prestigious 4+4 tournament at Blackwell, Ponca City was the runner-up. Chris Kiser at 106 and Rayden Agee at 160 were individual champions; Preston Lee at 126, Ryker Agee at 138, Gabe Roland at 182 and Ayden Kreger at 195 finished second; Jimmy Swenson at 113, Cameron Kiser at 120 and Jack Swenson at 132 were third; Joe Leavitt at 220 and Cayson Badley at heavyweight, were fourth; Tanner Greenfield at 152 pounds was fifth and Darius Allen at 220 was sixth.

The Wildcats were the fifth place team at the Class 6A Regional Tournament. NIne Wildcats qualified for the State Tournament. They were Chris Kiser at 106, 1st; Gabe Roland at 182, second; Cameron Kiser at 120, third; Landon Newlin at 195, 4th; Ryker Agee at 138, 4th; Preston Lee at 126, 4th; Jack Swenson at 132, 5th; and Rayden Agee at 138, 5th.

Next year promises to be another productive year with most of the starting wrestlers returning.
